Gardeners Calendar

A gathering place for vegetable gardeners & allotmenteers

I planted some mammoth garlic in November. It has grown really well but it seems as though it is about to go to seed. Is this right? The cloves haven't started to form yet, also it is supposed to be ready in 3 months time in August.

I've got no advice at all but am simply here to add my voice to yours. The garlic that I planted in November is just bolting and seems to be about to put on a flower show. This is only nice, I understand, if you like the flowers but aren't at all bothered about the garlic. Grrrrr!

Maybe it's a garlic thing? It seems as though none of the Forum Gods know the answer either but I bet they're all busy bees gardening from dusk til dawn! Forum Gods, please help!

One of my plants started to turn yellow so I decided to take it out to take a look. It had statred to rot and reeked to high heaven. 'Just hope that the others won't follow but I have little hope.

I planted garlic last spring, they came up like spring onions then just dissapeared I planted more in the autum and again in the spring (I really love garlic and was determind!). Before I could dig over the patch from last year its started to grow again and I've just had my first couple of bulbs. This years is coming but is slower and it is going to seed however I read that you should only harvest it after it as flowered so as far as I can tell, going to seed it a good thing! Good luck and keep us posted! :)

Katie,
Thanks for the info. Since posting my original request for assistance I have noticed that the base of the plants is begining to widen just as though the bulbs are staring to form. I'll take Pauls advice and lop off the flower spikes and see what transpires. Thanks again.

Still worried I decided to lift one of the smallest plants which appeared to have grown very little. WOW, what a pleasant surprise. The bulbs were below the surface of the soil and are huge. Lets hope that yours also do well.

Hi Mielie,

Don't worry as soon as the flower spikes appear cut them off and the Garlic will continue to grow.
