Gardeners Calendar

A gathering place for vegetable gardeners & allotmenteers

Hi all

I don't have a greenhouse yet and have seen outdoor tomato plants on the Unwins site. They have 3 plants each of 3 varieties but don't really detail what these need. I very much value your comments and would appreciate advice, please, on the following:
SUN: my garden is NE (or ENE to be precise) facing so no part of my garden (front or back) gets the sun all day. A small sheltered bed in the front (ideal to convert) gets the sun from about 2pm til sunset so the very hottest part of the sun in summer; is this enough?
SOIL/FEED/WATER: would prob build a raised bed or use grow bags, feed weekly and already have a watering system. Do they prefer little water often (keeping moist) or less often and a good douse?
MULCH: Does one mulch tomato plants? Does it matter?
BUGS/DISEASE: Assuming the flowers need pollinations, I guess enviromesh is out and I recall aphids being a potential problem. What's the best way to tackle slugs, bugs, pests and unwanted visitors in a reasonably green/organic way? If it involves picking anything crawly off of anything, it ain't gonna happen; in hand-to-hand combat with pests, they can have whatever they want!
ANYTHING ELSE: If you've hints and tips that might help, do let me know.
