Hi there, Just joined the site and noticed your question re perennial cauliflowers. I think we must have read the same article in 'Grow your own' and it is cauliflowers (not broccolli). I sent off for some plants (you can't buy the seed for these i…

Thanks Neil. I thought it was broccoli, so thanks for confirming that. I'm always on the lookout for veg that you don't just pull up after just one season so this one sounds like a winner. Gaz.

-------Hi Gary, This is in fact Nine Star Perennial Broccoli. I have grown it several times in the past. Myself I have usually had up to 10-12 heads on each plant. One large centre head that was like a nice smallish cauli and the others like very fu…

Now the winter is upon us and there isn't much to do on the plot, I'll be featuring new music on a regular basis. Enjoy.

Hi All, Just Wondering If anyone here grows or is thinking about growing the above mentioned veg. There was a article in grow your own magazine this month about this veg, and it has intrigued me somewhat. I've looked on the internet and found vary…

I've found a little pdf on the internet that gives instructions on heat treating bean seeds to kill the larvae of bean weevils that may have infested your stored bean seeds. I've also tested the seed for germination and have found that it doesn't se…

Hi WithaG, The trouble with pumpkins, or any of the cucurbits family is they are sex made and will happily cross pollinate with any other member of the same family including butternut squash, marrow, cucumber and courgettes. So unless the place tha…

Hi Lorraine, As they say, prevention is better than the cure. Fine netting wins hands down. I've had no end of trouble with brassicas of all sorts from slugs to whitefly to pigeons to cabbage white. obviously the net wont rid you of all pests but t…

Hi Gaelle, Firstly i'd stop watering them altogether, for some reason it seems to stem the flow of blight. Then If you have quite large tomatoes and serious blight issues then I'd take all of the tomatoes off the plants and make chutneys with them,…

Hi Fuggles, I've done it before but with limited success. The last 2 years of storing beans has not gone at all well due to an infestation of bean weevils, the beans look fine unil after a few weeks when the little blighters hatch out and spread li…

I'm not sure that the amount produced would do any of your plants damage that could seriously set them back. Gaz.

Hi Gaelle, I wouldn't worry too much about the ants and just use it as and when you need it. I've had a similar problem in my compost and all I did was dig the surface over repeatedly, the ants never really left the compost but they weren't so keen…

Forgot to mention that the inner leaves of the pak choi are still very nice in a light salad when sliced with other leaves... lovely mustard flavour.

Rain stops play.

Here we are in the middle of July and half way through my week off from work and you guessed it... Rain has now descended upon us. Just as well I've still got another 3 weeks holiday left. So many plans have been laid waste for this week now because of the rain, I guess I'll just have to continue on with the pickle creations. Oh Well.

Pickling Fever.

Mixed Pickle, Pickling Shallots, Mustard Pickle..... the list goes on. Boy when you get a glut you really get a glut. As if trying to keep on top of 20kg of strawberries wasn't enough to contend with, I'm now getting into gherkins and cucumber territory... not to mention marrows. Who Am I kidding? as if I don't thrive on trying to find new ways with my crops.
