Hi Susan, You'd be surprised at what "weeds" you can eat. on our plot we have an abundance of fat hen, nettles and cleavers, all of which can be eaten and the best thing about the majority of them is that they tend to emerge much sooner than any of…

Hi Chris, Re: firewater. I've been "brewing my stinkpot" in this way for about 4 years now. Just keep adding the weeds, of which you will probably have many due to this hot weather and the copious amount of watering that needs doing at this time of…

Hi Linda, As Neil has already pointed out, They are easy to grow but it isn't in most cases viable to do so on a small scale. I've grown Chick peas with pretty much getting back the same amount of seeds as I put in to give you some idea of the retu…

Hi Ronald, Potatoes sound like a pretty good idea providing the ground does not stay waterlogged as you my find they rot before you get a chance to dig them up at cropping time. I'd start straight away of some sort of large scale composting and ge…

I'd do the same and just carry on using it. I have a similar system going where you drown any old weeds in a barrel in my case.. leave them to rot down and then use the resulting juice in a 50/50 ratio to feed pretty much anything. this has been bre…

Hi Susan, Sounds to me like if your butt is made of a plastic, the smell may just be residual from the moulding process. If this is the case then i'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about. Just to be on the safe side i'd fill it with rainwater bu…

--------Hi Lesley, I am not sure why Victoriana states that they cannot sell the seed because of the EU. Chilterns are out of stock for 2010, but Thompson & Morgan have got them in for sale, so they cannot be off the EU register. Keep on buying the…

Hi there, Just joined the site and noticed your question re perennial cauliflowers. I think we must have read the same article in 'Grow your own' and it is cauliflowers (not broccolli). I sent off for some plants (you can't buy the seed for these i…

Thanks Neil. I thought it was broccoli, so thanks for confirming that. I'm always on the lookout for veg that you don't just pull up after just one season so this one sounds like a winner. Gaz.

-------Hi Gary, This is in fact Nine Star Perennial Broccoli. I have grown it several times in the past. Myself I have usually had up to 10-12 heads on each plant. One large centre head that was like a nice smallish cauli and the others like very fu…

Now the winter is upon us and there isn't much to do on the plot, I'll be featuring new music on a regular basis. Enjoy.

Hi All, Just Wondering If anyone here grows or is thinking about growing the above mentioned veg. There was a article in grow your own magazine this month about this veg, and it has intrigued me somewhat. I've looked on the internet and found vary…

I've found a little pdf on the internet that gives instructions on heat treating bean seeds to kill the larvae of bean weevils that may have infested your stored bean seeds. I've also tested the seed for germination and have found that it doesn't se…

Rain stops play.

Here we are in the middle of July and half way through my week off from work and you guessed it... Rain has now descended upon us. Just as well I've still got another 3 weeks holiday left. So many plans have been laid waste for this week now because of the rain, I guess I'll just have to continue on with the pickle creations. Oh Well.

Pickling Fever.

Mixed Pickle, Pickling Shallots, Mustard Pickle..... the list goes on. Boy when you get a glut you really get a glut. As if trying to keep on top of 20kg of strawberries wasn't enough to contend with, I'm now getting into gherkins and cucumber territory... not to mention marrows. Who Am I kidding? as if I don't thrive on trying to find new ways with my crops.
