Do check out www.Dobies.co.uk, they ave a wonderful catalog and great prices. and a decent selection. The average price for seed potatoes is £6.95 per 3 kg bag or £5.95 per if you order 2 or more packs and combination. That has worked out to about 4…

On our allotment, we always ask the old timers the varieties that work best for them and work out which ones to try from that. Desiree seems to be the favourite on our site. We trialled a few varieties last year all of which were from sainbury's. Or…

Who knows it might even give them a turbo boost to next door's plot. hehehe

Funny that I was going to say pretty much the same thing. My plan now is just to get a decent crop before the slugs do. I had much more success with Jerusalem Artichokes.... only trouble is they do make you a bit windy. Happy planting. Gaz.

Hi Sarah, I buy them off EBay, there's not a great selection at the moment but I did find these maincrop reds 50 for 9£.90 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Taylors-50-ORGANIC-RED-POTATO-ROBINTA-Allotment_W0QQitemZ130311327304QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HomeGarden_G

I've just been shopping 'round for late seed potatoes for winter/Christmas and they seem v expensive. Anyone know of a less expensive supplier? *Suttons have 2kg for £12.90 inc P&P or 5 potatoes (Maris Piper) £9.90 *Marshalls don't have any. *Thomp…

I've got no advice at all but am simply here to add my voice to yours. The garlic that I planted in November is just bolting and seems to be about to put on a flower show. This is only nice, I understand, if you like the flowers but aren't at all bo…

Thanks Gavin. Actually, I'm experiencing a distinct lack of leafy growth and they don't seem to be doing very well at all. They're watered but not excessively and fed weekly with Tomrite but they're not really that impressive. I've moved the pots in…

Another tip you might like to try is when your toms start to take over the world with lots of leafy growth remove a few of the lower leaves from the bottom of the plant to let the air circulate around your tomatoes. This has at least two benefits, i…

When I planned to start growing veggies I did a load of research and the notes I can just make out are scribbled on the jotter I've got by the computer. As far as I can make out, they say: BEETROOT is good with onions, lettuce and cabbage POTATOES…

Thanks Heron, that's great. I have a watering system so the toms'll get watered when everything else does and, following your advice, I'll time it for a longer morning watering and just a minute or two of an evening if it gets scorching (if only...)…

go with the first location, in my opinion anyhow, i have always grown extra tomatos on the front porch so i can have some too. :P hehehe! (it's kind of a family joke, but my hubby likes to go out there and get the raw hot peppers that are ready for…

Which is more important, heat or sun? I have to choose between putting my outdoor tomatoes in front of a fence where it gets the afternoon sun from about 13:30 or in a more sheltered corner a bit further along where it gets the sun from later, 14:3…

Hi all I don't have a greenhouse yet and have seen outdoor tomato plants on the Unwins site. They have 3 plants each of 3 varieties but don't really detail what these need. I very much value your comments and would appreciate advice, please, on the…

See how her garden grows...

I do wish I'd kept this blog a little more up to date as I need to re-do my lawn fertilizer/moss killer and need to leave 6 weeks between but can't remember when I last did it! Have finally finished digging over a long-abandoned bed along one side of my garden and am amazed how many brambles and young sycamore-type trees were in there. Will have to wait til the end of summer to kill the remaining stumps off but have planted bee-friendly seeds, lupins, calendulas and other flowers that will be go… Continue

It's all going scarily well and I have babies!

Where am I up to? I have 3 beds in (roots, alium, legumes) and planted up with the 4th one (brassica/squash) well on it's way. My babies, carrots and beetroot are finally showing (I'd all but given up on them) so I've lifted the enviromesh onto upturned plan pots to give their little shoots a chance. I've added a row of radish and salad leaves to the end of the alium bed until I decide whether to plant leeks or not. The leek plants seem quite expensive to buy compared to the supermarket. I know… Continue

2 down and 2 to go.. or maybe 3

Much to my surprise, I have finished the second raised bed taking one of the forum gods' advise to just de-turf, put a good layer of sand on then waggle a fork around to create drainage holes then covered the whole lot with compost/sand mixture (v much more compost than sand).

I've planted onions red baron and...ummm...can't remember (it WAS yesterday!) leaving enough room for the leeks I intend to get in.

When my neighbour and I felled a tree last autumn, I kept all of the long straightish br… Continue

Veg bed number 1 - done and dusted

Where did I get to? Ah yes, digging. So I dug the whole thing out, ploughed in 4 big bags of sharp sand, mixed it up, put it all back then started on the sides of the raised bed; the raised portion as it were. That's a right game isn't it?

I had a search around for the cheapest practical option and that seemed to be wooden gravel boards. I bought those from Wickes (my little Punto is actually a tardis!) 5 x 2.4 x 0.15m boards for £11.74 and a length of 5 x 5cm for the corner posts. On Th… Continue

Day 2 of the digathon

Was too busy socially whirring yesterday to get anything done in the garden except purchase a boot-load of compost and sand. The forum gods (thank you) said they recommend raised beds and that's all very well but with my little car, I'm not sure how to get 2.4m long gravel boards home. Mind you, having spent nearly all day our there, I'm still at the digging stage! I do NOT believe people do this for enjoyment! Me back's killing me and I must have turned over more mud than... it's funny that the… Continue
